Department of rehabilitation sciences, occupational therapy research group

Occupational Therapy Research Group at Universiteit Gent is dedicated to advancing the understanding and application of occupation and participation through a comprehensive research program spanning three interconnected lines. Our fundamental research explores the core concepts of meaningful activities, occupation, and participation, examining their impact on identity, well-being, and quality of life. In our translational research, we focus on bringing these foundational insights into practice by developing models for personalized medicine, goal-oriented care, self-management, role-management, and value-based healthcare. Finally, our applied research tests and evaluates these approaches in real-world settings through randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and realist evaluation studies, with projects addressing goal-oriented care in primary care, life participation in chronic kidney disease, personalized rehabilitation in chronic low back pain, role-management in major depression, and return-to-work strategies using the capability approach. Together, these research lines form a dynamic and evidence-based framework to strengthen occupational therapy practice and policy. https://www.ugent.be/ge/reva/en/research/occupational_therapy_research_unit_ghent
